At Rouse Hill Family Vets, we recently had the pleasure of helping a special little dog named Marty. Marty came to us with a frustrating problem that had been plaguing him for a few months—itchy skin and significant hair loss, particularly on his lower back. His owner was concerned, as Marty was clearly uncomfortable, frequently scratching, chewing, and showing signs of redness and irritation.
Upon Marty’s first visit, our team carefully examined him and discussed his medical history with his owner. We noted the areas where his fur had thinned out significantly, and the skin beneath was inflamed. It was clear that Marty was dealing with more than just a minor irritation. Chronic skin issues like Marty’s can be caused by various factors, including allergies, parasites, or infections, and require a thorough investigation to properly diagnose and treat.
To get to the root of the problem, we performed a sticky tape test, where we retrieved skin cells from the affected area using sticky tape and examined them under a microscope. This test helps determine whether the irritation could be fungal or bacterial and guides us in determining the best course of action.
We implemented a treatment regimen that included:
-
Anti-itch medication to help reduce Marty’s discomfort and prevent him from further aggravating the area.
-
Medicated shampoo to reduce fungal infections and keep the area clean.
-
A specific veterinary supplement containing krill oil and green-lipped mussel, which supports the oils in the coat and helps keep it healthy.
-
A skin mousse to moisturize the skin and restore the skin barrier.
The Results: Marty’s Road to Recovery
We’re thrilled to report that with this treatment plan, Marty’s condition has significantly improved. His fur is growing back, the irritation has subsided, and Marty’s relentless scratching and chewing have all but disappeared.
Our team was dedicated to ensuring that Marty received the best care possible, and his case is a wonderful reminder of the importance of perseverance and a tailored approach when dealing with chronic conditions.
